Set Top Box Redesign

Sky’s position in the market was under threat by emerging technology driving more affordable pricing and on-demand entertainment for customers.

Responsibilities

I was the Design Lead on this project with three other designers. All the design work shown here is my own. I worked collaboratively on a daily basis with the Product, Marketing and Technical teams. The market analysis and data insights information was supplied by the Product teams.

Brief

• Customers reluctant to pay annual Sky subscriptions
• Consumers want event PPV model
• Sky needed to improve its products due to competition
• Reinvent the Sky EPG experience on a small budget
• Use existing remote control shape and button selection
• Use existing colour button shortcut selections

Solution

• New, smaller & affordable wifi enabled hardware box
• More personable functionality for multiple household users.
• User profiles, content discovery, save & share, on-demand and rental access

Execution

• Complete overhaul of the navigation paradigm
• Customer centric lead UX
• Increased speed in the UI’s results response
• New architecture
• Updated UI vocabulary

Define

We conducted our research around; customer interviews, online surveys, competitor analysis, internal data, hardware performance and usage, known user profiles. All of which identified new challenges and confirmed presumed expectations.

Strategy

Once we had identified the challenges during the discovery phase, combined with hardware limitations and cost constraints . We were in a position to layout the strategy and intentions as a package to share with colleagues. So that within the larger separate team structure a common goal was to be achieved.

Ideation

Quick sketch iterations for screen composition, and font size settings on screen from sofa distance viewing.

Navigation

An exploration into various best practice and more topological navigational paradigms. Combined with more responsive hardware gave us more rapid and flexible motion on screen to explore new ideas.

Prototype

Designing the key screens for a user flow. Three separate prototypes were built for internal testing. Afterwards design amends were made to iterate the prototypes further for customer testing.


Final Design

Once user testing and validation was complete. A final design working prototype was created and shared within the wider team. This was used as the blueprint to commence work on the Electronic Programme Guide V2 and other connected projects.
